Dental hygiene

The foundation of oral health is the regular removal of dental plaque.

Good oral hygiene is the key to healthy teeth and gums. Even with conscientious home care, it is hard to remove all soft plaque. Within a few days, contact with minerals in saliva turns this plaque into hard deposits – calculus (tartar).

Why remove dental plaque?

Plaque irritates the gums, which become inflamed. This condition is called gingivitis and shows as swollen, reddish gums that bleed at the slightest touch, such as brushing and flossing. Once the plaque is removed, the gums return to health within a few days.

Untreated gingivitis can over time progress to an advanced inflammation of the supporting tissues – periodontal disease. Besides the gums, the bone is also affected and begins to resorb because of the inflammation, which can lead to gum recession, black triangles between the teeth and increased mobility; in long-standing untreated periodontal disease this can lead to extractions and tooth loss.

The dental hygienist – a specialist in oral health and plaque removal:

Regular visits to the dental hygienist and thorough, precise removal of plaque are the foundation of long-term gum and periodontal health.

Treatment with the dental hygienist takes place in three stages:

  1. removal of hard deposits (calculus) with an ultrasonic scaler
  2. removal of surface stains with an air-polishing unit and special powder
  3. polishing of the tooth surfaces with polishing paste and a brush

Early detection of periodontal disease is important:

At Oasis Dental, the dental hygienist and dentists also work together to successfully arrest the progression of periodontal disease. Early diagnosis is the most important factor, so at the first examination we take time to examine your periodontal tissues thoroughly.

Sometimes we find localised areas of inflammation; in other patients we find overlooked advanced periodontal disease that already affects all the teeth.

Treatment varies with the individual and their condition, but as a general rule, periodontal disease detected early is much easier, faster and cheaper to arrest than an advanced form.

Modern equipment and instruments:

To treat periodontal disease we use modern equipment and materials such as a laser, special air-polishing units and bone substitutes. Besides well-performed treatment, it is essential that we teach you how to maintain the result easily. Together with the dental hygienist you set up an individual plan of check-ups and cleanings – this is how we keep your teeth healthy.
