The Waterlase iPlus Er,Cr:YSGG hard-tissue laser for innovative treatment approaches.

At Oasis Dental we use the advanced Waterlase iPlus hard-tissue laser made by BIOLASE, one of the world’s leading laser manufacturers with a long history of innovation and of producing high-quality, effective devices.

How does the Waterlase iPlus laser work?

Waterlase iPlus is an Er,Cr:YSGG laser – it belongs to the group of hard-tissue erbium lasers. Erbium lasers are used in various fields of medicine, one of which is dentistry. Hard-tissue erbium lasers have proven to be a useful tool for treating enamel and dentine. They allow precise and fast treatment of dental tissues, which reduces pain and treatment time.

The Waterlase iPlus Er,Cr:YSGG laser has a wavelength of 2780 nm, so it is selectively absorbed by water and hydroxyapatite, the main components of enamel and dentine. The laser removes tissue by ablation, caused by the interaction between the laser energy and the tissue. The process is very precise, as the power and duration of the laser can be controlled.

What are the advantages of the Waterlase iPlus laser over conventional methods?

The main advantages of the Waterlase iPlus Er,Cr:YSGG laser in dentistry are fast, precise treatment of dental tissues, which reduces pain and treatment time. Most dental conditions can be treated with the Waterlase iPlus laser in a minimally invasive way. Lasers are a safe and gentler alternative to some conventional dental instruments (drills, …).

Thanks to the combination of laser energy and water spray, procedures with the Waterlase iPlus laser are painless or require less anaesthetic.

Which procedures can be performed with the Waterlase iPlus laser?

The Waterlase iPlus laser can be used in practically every field of dentistry: surgery, aesthetics, periodontal therapy, caries removal, … The video below shows some of the treatment options:

Crown lengthening, gingivectomy and other soft-tissue procedures.

Clinical crown lengthening can be a purely aesthetic procedure or a functional one when the tissues need adjusting before crowns are made. Waterlase iPlus allows faster, painless treatment compared with conventional instruments (scalpel, …). Recovery after laser treatment is very fast.

Treatment of periodontal disease

The Waterlase iPlus laser is an excellent complement to the conventional procedures we use in periodontal treatment. The laser allows minimal invasiveness, shorter recovery and less pain compared with more extensive surgery.

Treatment of peri-implantitis – inflammation around dental implants

Patient response, inadequate hygiene and poorly executed treatment can cause inflammation around dental implants. One treatment option is the Waterlase iPlus laser for decontaminating the implant surface and the surrounding tissues.

Fillings

Using a laser instead of a drill is a different experience for the patient, as there is no vibration from the drill. Waterlase iPlus is particularly suitable for patients who fear the dentist because of past bad experiences.

The drawback of using a laser for fillings is that it cannot remove grey amalgam fillings and some other dental materials – in those cases a drill is necessary.

Gum depigmentation

Gum pigmentation can be very unpleasant for some people, as it negatively affects the appearance of the teeth and smile.

There are several causes of pigmentation: most often it is a normal, often genetic phenomenon, but it can also be influenced by some systemic diseases, medication, amalgam remnants in the tissues, smoking, …

Root canal treatment

Using the Waterlase iPlus laser in root canal treatment increases the success of the procedure. Laser energy is used to activate the disinfectant irrigants in the tooth in a special way, creating micro-explosions on the root canal surface that remove bacteria from the root canal system effectively and completely safely. Which treatment is right for you?

At Oasis Dental we assess each patient’s individual needs and recommend the most suitable treatment for their case. We discuss the use of lasers to enhance the procedures you need at the first examination.

The laser is an exceptional tool that makes some procedures less invasive and more successful, but it should be seen as a complement to established dental procedures. For some indications it is not suitable, and conventional techniques give better results. At Oasis Dental we are trained in the full range of procedures, from conventional to laser, so we can always propose the right treatment or combination of treatments.
