Expression lines and jaw muscles
Expression lines form through repeated contraction of the facial muscles, for example when frowning, raising the eyebrows or smiling. Over time they become visible even when the face is relaxed. Frequent clenching can enlarge the jaw muscles, which widens the lower face and puts additional strain on the teeth and the jaw joint.
Who the consultation is for
You can book a consultation if you are bothered by:
- expression lines on the forehead, between the eyebrows or at the outer corners of the eyes,
- markedly enlarged jaw muscles,
- tension or pain in the jaw muscles due to bruxism (clenching and grinding of the teeth).
How the consultation works
- Discussion – what bothers you and what you expect.
- Medical history – general health, medicines you take, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any previous aesthetic treatments.
- Examination – assessment of facial expression, skin and jaw muscles; with bruxism, also tooth wear and the jaw joint.
- Proposal – we explain the treatment options, the expected effect and how long it lasts, the risks and the alternatives, including the option that no treatment is needed.
- Decision – we only go ahead if the treatment is suitable for you and you have given your consent. You do not need to decide on the day of the consultation.
Treatment options
Based on the findings, we present the options that make sense for you. This may be injection treatment of selected facial or jaw muscles with a prescription medicine; with bruxism, the priority is protecting the teeth with a custom splint and appropriate dental care.
The effect of injection treatment is temporary and varies between individuals, so it cannot be guaranteed in advance. It is performed by a doctor of dental medicine with appropriate additional training.
Risks and possible side effects
Like any medical procedure, injection treatment carries risks. The most common are temporary redness, swelling, bruising or pain at the injection site, and headache. Less often, temporary drooping of an eyelid or eyebrow, asymmetric facial expression or weakness when chewing may occur. Side effects are mostly temporary. We discuss the risks that apply to you in detail at the consultation.
When treatment is not suitable
Injection treatment is not suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with inflammation or infection of the skin at the injection site, with certain neuromuscular diseases, or when taking certain medicines. A detailed medical history is therefore an essential part of the consultation.
After treatment
You can resume normal daily activities straight away. For the first few hours, do not massage the area, do not lie down and avoid strenuous exercise; until the next day, also avoid saunas and strong heat. The effect develops gradually over a few days. You will receive detailed instructions at the treatment.
Price
You will receive the price of treatment at the consultation, as it depends on the extent. Other prices are in our price list.
Who treats you
Frequently asked questions
Is a consultation required before treatment?
Yes. We only carry out treatment after an examination and discussion, once we know your health status and expectations.
How long does the effect last?
The effect is temporary and varies between individuals; it usually lasts a few months. We give you an estimate at the consultation.
Is the treatment painful?
We use very fine needles, so the sensation at the injection is usually brief and mild.
What about bruxism?
With bruxism, the basic measure is protecting the teeth with a custom splint. At the consultation we also assess jaw-muscle tension and suggest further treatment.
The information on this page is general and does not replace an examination and consultation with a doctor of dental medicine.
